Our Picks: Aftershaves for Ingrown Hair
In our October 2026 review, all six previous picks failed our check (no alcohol base, fragrance, essential oils, menthol or harsh preservatives), so we removed them:- Tend Skin Solution – Isopropyl alcohol is the first ingredient, followed by acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin).[5] It is not a gentle facial cleanser or toner, and it isn’t suitable for anyone allergic to aspirin. None of our dermatology sources recommend aspirin solutions for ingrown hairs.
- Shaveworks The Cool Fix – It contains glycolic and salicylic acids, but also SD alcohol 40-B and fragrance.[6]
- NIVEA MEN Maximum Hydration Post Shave Balm – It lists denatured alcohol, fragrance, lavender and orange peel oils, and menthol.[7]
- T.N. Dickinson’s Witch Hazel – It is fragrance-free, but it is witch hazel with 14% alcohol, sold as an astringent that soothes and tones.[8] It doesn’t treat ingrown hairs, and astringents can dry the skin.
- L’Occitane Cade Comforting After-Shave Balm – It lists fragrance plus cade wood and rosemary oils.[9]
- Luviore Ingrown Hair Treatment Solution – The maker doesn’t publish the ingredients online. The carton list shared on the web shows isopropyl alcohol, acetylsalicylic acid and fragrance, with an aspirin allergy warning.[10]

Vanicream® Moisturizing Lotion Fragrance-Free Lotion for Post-Shave Skin

- This lotion isn’t marketed as an aftershave, but it’s a simple, fragrance-free lotion you can use on the face, legs, underarms and body after shaving.[11]
- Vanicream says it is free of fragrance and masking fragrance, with no botanical extracts or essential oils, and the ingredient list has no denatured alcohol.[11]
- It’s non-comedogenic and carries the National Eczema Association Seal of Acceptance.[11]
- Petrolatum is the second ingredient, so it feels richer than a gel.[11]

CeraVe® PM Facial Lotion Fragrance-Free Ceramide Moisturizer for Shaved Skin

- This is a light, oil-free face lotion for both men and women. It makes a good after-shave moisturizer, especially if you shave at night.[12]
- CeraVe says it has no added fragrance and is non-comedogenic, and the ingredient list has no denatured alcohol.[12]
- Glycerin, niacinamide, hyaluronic acid and three ceramides support the skin barrier.[12]
- CeraVe labels it for evening use, so wear sunscreen during the day.[12]
What Are Ingrown Hairs Exactly
An ingrown hair forms when a hair that has been shaved, waxed or tweezed grows back and curls into the skin instead of out. It’s more common with thick, coarse or curly hair.[13] It shows up as a small, itchy or painful bump that may be red, brown or purple. If it becomes infected, the bump can grow, fill with pus and scar.[13] Ingrown hairs are most common on the beard area, legs, armpits and bikini line.[13] Most clear up on their own within one to two weeks as the hair grows out.[13]How to Prevent Ingrown Hairs
- Take a Break – Stopping shaving, tweezing or waxing until the skin clears is the most reliable fix, though it can take 1 to 6 months.[14] If that isn’t practical, shave less closely, for example with electric clippers set to leave stubble.[14]
- Soften First – Shave at the end of a shower or hold a warm, damp washcloth on the area so the hairs swell and are less likely to curl back in.[2]
- Shave with the Grain – Use a shaving cream and shave in the direction the hair grows, rinsing the blade after each stroke.[1][14]
- Fresh Blades – Replace disposable razors after 5 to 7 shaves and store them dry.[2]
- Exfoliate Gently – Gentle exfoliation removes dead skin and helps release trapped hairs.[13] For sensitive skin, a washcloth and a mild chemical exfoliant (an alpha or beta hydroxy acid) may be gentler than a scrub. Never exfoliate over cuts or sunburn.[15]
- Finish Cool, Then Moisturize – Rinse, hold a cool, wet cloth on the skin, then apply a soothing post-shave product.[14][2]
- Freeing a Hair Safely – Only lift a hair whose loop you can already see above the skin. Slip a sterile needle under the loop and gently lift the tip out. Never dig into closed skin, and don’t tweeze ingrown hairs out.[14] Don’t pick at, scratch or squeeze the bumps, which can cause infection and scarring.[13]
- When to See a Dermatologist – If self-care doesn’t help, a doctor may prescribe a retinoid cream to clear dead skin, a glycolic acid lotion, steroid creams for irritation, antibiotics for infected bumps, or laser hair removal.[14] Get bumps checked if they are painful, infected, keep coming back or leave dark marks.[3]
Features of a Good Aftershave for Ingrown Hairs
- Soothing and Moisturizing – Choose a gentle, moisturizing product without alcohol. Glycerin is a useful humectant, and both of our picks contain it.[11][12]
- Fragrance-Free – Skip essential oils such as chamomile, eucalyptus and lavender. The law treats plant ingredients the same as any other, so they still count as fragrance, and some “unscented” products contain masking fragrance.[16] Tea tree oil can also irritate skin and cause allergic reactions.[4]
- Exfoliating Treatments – Products with glycolic or salicylic acid are treatments, not soothers. Introduce them slowly and keep them off broken or freshly irritated skin.[15]
